Broccoli is a member of the cruciferous family, which includes all cabbages as well as radishes, turnips and watercress. This funny, green vegetable originated in Italy, where it was called "brocco", translated as "shoot", which later became "broccolo" and the plural "broccoli". Much eaten by the Romans, it was Catherine de Medici, a great figure of the 16th century, who made it famous in France and nicknamed it "Italian asparagus".
