Faced with the large tea plantations in Sri Lanka, the SOFA (SMALL ORGANIC FARMERS ASSOCIATION) cooperative promotes small-scale farming that protects biodiversity and uses natural soil fertilisation.

The 2,022 farmers have small gardens (from 0.2 to 5 hectares) where they grow tea and spices, which guarantee a fair trade income, as well as fruit and vegetables for their own consumption.

The key issue for SOFA remains improving the standard of living of farming families. The implementation of organic and Fair Trade marketing channels, as well as improving the quality of production, have helped to increase their income.

The cooperative's Sri Lankan producers use natural fertilisers and combine crops (tea and spices), thus ensuring the biodiversity of their plots.

The partnership between SOFA and BIOFOODS (the company that collects the tea) also enables the producers to add value to the other products from their gardens (spices, fruit and vegetables) through fair trade and on the local market - and to process and package the products locally, thereby contributing to the economic development of the region.
