Why choose glass for storage?

Unlike plastic, which is rarely 100% recyclable, glass is! It can be recycled over and over again. Glass is therefore a more ecological material, which is healthier for the environment and also for the human body.

An environmental issue:

At a time when zero waste is becoming more and more part of our lifestyle, the production of single-use plastic continues to grow at a rate of 4% per year since 2000. In the face of this continued growth, deposits on food packaging and everyday objects appear to be one of the preferred solutions for limiting environmental damage. While we are seeing a gradual return to this practice at local level in France and Belgium, the deposit of glass bottles and jars is not a new phenomenon. Consignment glasses allow them to be returned to the shop and put back into circulation for reuse. But where does this phenomenon come from and what does it involve? In this article, we will look at the origin and effectiveness of the deposit, and why Nowa Market decided to work with it.  

The model of extraction, production and consumption in the developed world is no longer adequate for a responsible future. We need to move to a model based on zero waste and increased use of already extracted resources to reduce their environmental impact. This is the goal of the circular economy, of which deposit and reuse of deposits are good examples.

The deposit is a system that has advantages over glass recycling!

The advantages of a deposit for bottle reuse are, first of all, economic: deposit costs are 2 to 7 times lower than recycling, and consumers save on the costs of disposable packaging. But of course it is also ecological. Glass is a very resistant material, a glass bottle can be reused up to 50 times, which is more advantageous than recycling, which requires a lot of energy, as it has to be remelted and heated to 1500°C.

In concrete terms, choosing to reuse their containers rather than recycle them would allow distributors to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 70%, sulphur dioxide emissions by 60% (responsible for air acidification and acid rain, which damages the marine ecology) and save 40% of water compared to standard production.

Glass is made only from natural elements. In fact, it is made from sand, limestone and soda ash: no additives are added to make it. Both inert and unchanging, the naturalness of glass is its strength. No chemical elements or atmospheric agents can alter it.

Neutral and safe

Glass is a neutral packaging for food because it preserves all the flavours without altering them. Moreover, it holds them better because it is more hermetic than any other material. But that's not all!

Glass is also watertight and guarantees the good preservation of the food's properties: vitamins, minerals and of course all their benefits.

How does the deposit work at Nowa Market?

At the checkout you will see that you pay a deposit per container. This varies from €0.10 to €1. This is a form of 'rent' for the packaging of your shopping. The deposit will be refunded to you in the form of vouchers once we have collected them.

What is this QR code?

Underneath each deposit, there is a unique QR code. This QR code allows us to trace the deposits so that we can efficiently track the order and the return of the deposits. Thanks to this, there is no need to track the refunds of the deposits, as soon as they arrive at one of our partners, we will be notified of the good progress of the return and the refund to be made.

To make it easier for us, we strongly recommend that you do not put the jars in the dishwasher to preserve the code. You can of course rinse them before returning them to us for optimal washing.
